Historical Information

The previous hit county  next hit was formed from Augusta and Botetourt previous hit Counties  next hit in 1778, and another part of Botetourt was added later. Its area is 600 square miles, and the previous hit county  next hit seat is Lexington.

Scope and Content

Minute Books, 1779-1889, record all matters brought before the court on a daily basis when it was in session including but not limited to: civil and criminal suits, appointments of previous hit county  next hit officers, appointments of guardians and administrators, deed recordings, free negro registrations, naturalization registrations, and court fees. Clerks would transfer information from minute books to appropriate order book, deed book, fiduciary book, free negro register, etc. Collection includes minute books from previous hit County  next hit Court and Superior Court of Law and Chancery.
